UMMY float development story
UMMY floats were created with the hope that all swimmers can enjoy swimming safely.
In fact, we have considered developing and selling floats in the past.
However, in order to manufacture the floats, the minimum order quantity must be several hundred units, and the profit margin is also low. We decided that it would be difficult to sell several hundred floats in the current Japanese free diving market, and therefore decided not to sell them from a business perspective.
However, in April of this year (2024), we received a strong request from a marine shop to make a float with UMMY, and this marked a major turning point.
The reason for this is that skin divers and snorkelers often do not carry floats, which makes it very dangerous.Although the number of skin divers is increasing year by year, I myself,As a swimmer myself, I was very concerned about the large number of skin divers and snorkelers who went out to sea without floats.
- There is a risk of serious injury if you come into contact with nearby fishermen's boats or tourist boats without being noticed.
- In an emergency, it becomes difficult to communicate your location to others.
- It becomes difficult to take breaks between swims
- If you are traveling with children, they will lose a lot of energy if they do not have floats to help them swim.
- This makes it difficult to tow rescuers in an emergency.
- There will be no way to hydrate along the way.
As mentioned above, there are many dangers and disadvantages to not having a float, and if things continue as they are, sooner or later a serious accident may occur. Setting aside short-term profits as a company, I thought that it was our mission as a freediving gear brand to change this situation and create an environment in which all swimmers take a float when they go out to sea, so I began preparations to develop the UMMY float.
Should all swimmers have floats?
How can we make it the norm for all swimmers to bring their own floats? For swimmers to bring their own floats, the following costs and hassle are incurred.
- The floats must be purchased, which is costly
- It takes time to take it to the sea
- It's heavy and difficult to carry
However, we thought that floats would become popular if the benefits outweighed these costs and labor, so we began developing a float that could meet the following needs.
