Recommendations for masks

Hello.
A free diver from Okinawa.Like thisis.
The type of mask you use while diving can make a huge difference in how you experience the underwater world.
In previous posts, I have been talking about the skills needed to fully enjoy the underwater world. This time, I would like to talk about the mask, which is a very basic piece of equipment for enjoying the underwater world.💁♂️
Even if you adjust the weight properly, even if you can do a clean jackknife, even if you can dive deeper and deeper, it's no exaggeration to say that if you don't wear a good mask, you won't be able to enjoy the fun at all! In fact, it can even cause stress.😵
Freediving masks are recommended
The freediving mask is UMMY's signature product. This does not apply if you are only going to snorkel and not dive.If you're going to do free diving, skin diving, or other skin diving, this type is definitely recommended!
Even when you start skin diving, many people still use the same mask they used when snorkeling. However, if you start skin diving, it is recommended that you switch to a free diving mask!
Why a freediving mask is good
That's because it's small and soft.
This is because a small, soft mask means that water pressure has less impact on your eyes than a smaller mask.
What is the effect of water pressure?
When you start free diving, your body is exposed to much greater water pressure than when you are on the surface. Water pressure has a painful effect on four parts of the human body: the lungs, ears, sinuses, and eyes.
As you go deeper into the water, the water pressure gets stronger and stronger, and the air gets smaller and smaller. The lungs, ears (middle ear), and sinuses are spaces filled with air, and if you do nothing to prevent this, it will cause pain.
There is no air-filled space around the eyes, but when you wear a mask, a space is created between the eyes and the mask, and the air in that space becomes smaller due to the water pressure. Then the mask gradually presses against the face and sticks to it, pulling on the eyes and causing pain.
Less affected by water pressure
First of all, a smaller mask means there is less air between your eyes and the mask.
Let's say the capacity of a mask commonly used for scuba diving is 150. At a depth of 10m, the air is affected by water pressure and becomes half the volume it is at the surface, so the amount of air in the mask is reduced by 75. If the capacity of a free diving mask is 100, the amount of air lost by the time the mask reaches the same depth is 50. This means that the impact is 25 less than in the former case, so the impact on the eyes is also less.
Next, a soft mask means that it can be easily deformed.
In the case of a mask that loses 50% of the air inside it by reaching a depth of 10m, if the mask is rigid and does not deform, the entire loss of 50% will be felt by the eyes. If the mask is soft and flexible, the mask itself will deform and shrink, reducing the impact on the eyes.
Pressure Equalization
As explained above, to continue free diving you need to counter the effect of the air shrinking under water pressure, which is called pressure equilibration.
The idea is to send air into a space that is affected by water pressure.
In the case of the ears, you can reset the effect of water pressure by filling the middle ear with air by clearing your ears. We won't go into detail about the lungs and sinuses here, but unless you're feeling unwell, the pressure will be automatically equalized.
The space between the mask and the eyes can be balanced by blowing air through the nose. However, this can be difficult for some people who are not yet accustomed to free diving. In addition, if you use a large, hard mask, it will stick tightly to your face, causing discomfort and pain, making it difficult to enjoy the underwater world.
lastly
I have explained why free diving masks are recommended for skin diving, but that doesn't mean you have to use one, as free diving masks have their own unique way of looking at things and some masks may not suit your face. However, I think the benefits of being able to overcome these issues are great, so if you haven't tried one yet, I highly recommend you give it a try.
