Underwater photography with GoPro

GoProでの水中撮影の話

Hello.

A free diver from Okinawa.Like thisis.

This time, I will talk about what I pay attention to when shooting underwater videos with a GoPro.🎥

There are three main things I keep in mind!

It seems simple, but I'll explain each one.

Once you start recording, don't rotate the GoPro.

Have you ever noticed something like this when looking at the data of an underwater video you shot? The screen orientation changes from portrait to landscape, then portrait again... it's hard to see.

This is me holding a GoPro while filming.Hands held in front of faceThat's why.

Underwater, the subject moves in all directions: forward, backward, left, right, up, down, 360 degrees. If you aim the GoPro at the subject while following it with your eyes, it will inevitably turn sideways or vertically relative to the water surface.

To prevent this from happening,Keeps the orientation from when you started shootingThe camera will track the subject while keeping the camera still. It will allow the subject to change direction horizontally relative to the water surface, but will try to avoid vertical changes as much as possible.

Maintain the same depth as you are shooting as much as possible

When shooting videos underwater, you cannot fix your body like you can on land.Basically, it's camera shake. The GoPro's camera shake correction function can reduce it a lot, but it's still not as bad as on land.

GoPro during filmingMinimize depth changesand,This camera shake can be further reduced.🙌

What is important at this time is what I introduced in my previous blog.Control the water depth as you wishis.

Keep the subject's position on the screen as constant as possible

When looking at the captured data,The subject moves around the screenAnd this again becomes difficult to see.

If you are aware of where your subject is located in the field of view, and try to keep the subject from shifting from that position as much as possible, the image will be stable and easy to see.

To make this easier to understand, ITurn on grid settingsThe screen is divided into three vertical and three horizontal lines, creating nine frames on the screen. If you take a picture while paying attention to keeping the subject within one of these frames, when you look at the data later, the subject on the screen will be easier to see without bouncing around.🙌

Controlling the water depth

I mentioned earlier that it is important to control the water depth. Being able to control the water depth is a very important factor in putting the above three points into practice.

I think photographing the underwater world is one of the joys of skin diving and free diving.

It's more fun to film when the video you take is as close to what you see when you actually dive.🙌

Not all of the content here will apply to your scene, but I hope it will be of some help to you.

lastly

When you're having your video taken, you want to look cute!

My favorite UMMY maskBeach😎It is soft and suitable for free diving, and is a recommended item that is sure to look great under a mask.
